How our application process works

1. Apply online via our application form (link above), name, contact, role, current qualifications, CV upload
2. Initial CV screen within 3 working days, we read every CV personally
3. Online trade exam covering current 2026 UK regulations for your trade, 25 multiple-choice questions, 30-minute time limit, 75% pass mark. If you don't pass the exam, we won't be able to take it further (see below)
4. Phone interview, informal 20-minute chat to understand your background, salary expectations, why you're moving
5. In-person interview & practical assessment, half-day at our depot. Practical task on jointed pipework / boiler diagnosis / CCTV interpretation depending on the role
6. Reference check & offer, typically within 7 working days of in-person interview
7. Probation, 3-month review at standard rate, with confirmation of permanent role on successful probation

Why we use a written exam

Because the only thing worse than not finding a good engineer is hiring a bad one. Our customers expect City & Guilds Level 3 work, and that requires not just having the certificate but actually knowing the regulations cold. The exam takes 30 minutes and costs us nothing, but it filters out a lot of CVs that overstate experience. The questions cover current 2026 UK regulations: Building Regs Part G, H, J and L. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998; the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999; L8 ACoP for water hygiene. PUWER, COSHH and Working at Height for safety. If you've worked in the trade properly for 3+ years, the exam is straightforward. If you can't pass it, we're not the right employer for you.
