Hard Southern Water at 280 to 320 ppm CaCO3 deposits scale that can mask developing pinhole failures in copper compression fittings – a pattern seen in the small proportion of Eastleigh's 1980s and early 1990s stock where original copper supply pipework is still in service. On the more modern PVCu and barrier-pipe estates across SO30, SO50 and SO53, leaks are more likely at push-fit fittings disturbed by ground movement or thermal cycling, and they typically run silently under screed before damp manifests at skirting level. We trace supply-pipe leaks using acoustic correlation, which picks up the pressure-differential sound signature of a leak through the pipe wall and pinpoints its position to within centimetres, avoiding unnecessary floor breaks. Thermal imaging identifies wet screed and concealed moisture spreading from the source, and tracer gas – a non-toxic hydrogen-nitrogen blend – is introduced where acoustic signal is ambiguous in plastic pipe or under dense sub-floor fill.
