Canterbury's drainage picture divides sharply between the historic city and its coastal towns. Within the CT1 and CT2 conservation zone, original Victorian clay runs beneath listed buildings must be inspected by CCTV survey before any intervention – rodding blind in these conditions risks displacing brittle joints that have not moved in a century. Where a defect is confirmed, no-dig CIPP (cured-in-place pipe) relining is almost always the preferred remedy: it avoids excavation near archaeologically sensitive ground and keeps external fabric untouched, satisfying the conservation officer's requirements.

Out along the CT5 Whitstable and CT6 Herne Bay frontages, the failure modes shift. Salt-air corrosion softens PVCu saddle joints and degrades rubber seals in inspection chambers, and lateral collapses into the clay subsoil beneath seafront terraces are a recurring finding on CCTV surveys. Where relining will not suffice – root-ingress fractures, major offsets, or full-bore collapses – open excavation is carried out with traffic-management provision.
