South East Water supplies TN13 to TN16 at 280 to 310 ppm CaCO3 – consistently hard water that deposits scale inside copper supply pipework and masks the early acoustic signature of a pinhole leak. That factor alone makes standard listening-stick techniques less reliable here than in softer-water districts, which is why our surveys combine three complementary methods. Thermal imaging first: a calibrated camera reading surface temperature differentials across floors, walls and ceilings to locate the cold or warm anomaly a concealed leak creates. Acoustic correlation follows, using paired sensors and frequency analysis to triangulate the precise point of pipe failure behind finished surfaces. Where the leak sits in a deeply buried or inaccessible run – common on the long supply laterals serving the larger country-house and parkland properties around Westerham and Edenbridge – tracer gas (a nitrogen-hydrogen blend) is introduced to confirm the exact break point without trial excavation.
