Leak detection in Swale.

Hard chalk-aquifer water at 280 to 330 ppm CaCO3 – drawn from two suppliers, South East Water and Southern Water – accelerates scale formation inside copper pipework throughout Swale. Scale build-up raises internal pipe pressure at pinhole sites and masks the acoustic signature that would otherwise make a leak straightforward to locate. On the Isle of Sheppey this is compounded by the island's compact plot sizes, where supply lines often run beneath concrete-slab extensions with no accessible stop position short of the boundary.

We approach leak detection in Swale with a layered method: thermal imaging first identifies anomalous heat or moisture signatures through floor and wall finishes without any opening up; acoustic correlation then pinpoints the leak position along the supply run to within a few hundred millimetres; tracer gas is introduced where the line is too short or the background noise too high for acoustic correlation alone. All three methods are non-destructive and leave the fabric of the building undisturbed until we know exactly where to intervene.
