Leak detection in South Oxfordshire.

Hard chalk-aquifer water at 270 to 320 ppm CaCO3 – the Thames Water supply throughout OX9, OX10, OX11, OX44, OX49, RG8 and RG9 – deposits scale progressively inside copper and steel supply lines. Over decades that narrowing, combined with pinhole corrosion where scale has cracked, produces the most common leak pattern we find in South Oxfordshire: slow, sustained seepage concealed behind plasterwork or beneath screeded floors in the district's mix of period townhouses in Henley and Thame, and the larger post-war and new-build stock around Didcot.

Detection begins with thermal imaging to identify temperature anomalies in walls and floors, followed by acoustic correlation to pinpoint the leak source to within centimetres. Where supply routes are inaccessible or the signal is ambiguous – as is common in Wallingford's older rubble-wall construction – tracer gas is introduced to confirm position precisely before any intrusive work is authorised.
