The chalk-aquifer water Affinity Water delivers across RH1, RH2, RH3, RH6 and SM7 is consistently very hard at 280 to 320 ppm CaCO3, and that hardness complicates leak detection in two ways: calcite deposits mask acoustic signals on metal supply pipes, and the same scaling accelerates pinhole formation in older copper runs, particularly in the Victorian and Edwardian stock concentrated around Reigate and Redhill town centres. In the inter-war semis of Banstead (SM7), original lead communication pipes still appear, often running beneath block-paved driveways where ground movement goes unnoticed for months.

Our detection methodology combines three non-invasive techniques deployed in sequence: thermal imaging identifies surface temperature anomalies consistent with subsurface moisture; acoustic correlation pinpoints leak noise along the pipe run to within centimetres; and where the signal is ambiguous – common with plastic pipe in Horley's post-war stock – inert tracer gas confirms the precise exit point without excavation.
