Drainage in Worthing.

Worthing's drainage stock divides into two distinct eras, and both carry characteristic problems. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces concentrated in BN11 and BN14 – particularly around the streets feeding off Chapel Road and in Tarring Old Village – were typically built with salt-glazed clay branch drains and cast-iron soil stacks. After a century of Southern Water's very hard supply at 290 to 330 ppm CaCO3 washing through them, scale and root ingress are the dominant failure modes. The inter-war and post-war stock in Goring-by-Sea and Findon Valley (BN12 and BN13) brings a different issue: pitch-fibre pipes installed in the 1950s and 1960s that have delaminated and collapsed over time.
