Mains natural gas in the UK is dosed with mercaptan, a sulphurous-smelling odorant that humans can detect at concentrations as low as 0.4 parts per million, well below the lower explosive limit (4,4.5%). If you can smell gas, the concentration is at minimum hundreds of times below the explosive level, but you should still treat it as an emergency and not delay action.

The standard sequence in any UK gas emergency: (1) leave the property and don't switch any electrical equipment; (2) call National Gas Emergency 0800 111 999, they will dispatch a free engineer who will isolate the meter and make the property safe; (3) call us, we'll be with you within 60 minutes to identify the leak source within the property and carry out the permanent repair under our Gas Safe registration.

Frequently Asked

Your questions answered

What should I do if I smell gas?
Right now: Don't switch any lights or appliances on or off. Don't use phones or anything electrical inside the property. Open windows and doors. Leave the property. Call National Gas Emergency on 0800 111 999 from outside the property. Then call us on 020 8050 5306.
Is the National Gas Emergency Service free?
Yes, completely free, 24/7. They will attend, isolate the supply at the meter, make the property safe, and identify the source of the leak as far as their responsibility allows. Once safe, you need a Gas Safe registered engineer to carry out the actual repair within the property.
How quickly do you respond to a gas leak emergency?
Typically within 60 minutes anywhere in London once the property is made safe by the gas emergency service. We prioritise gas leak callouts above all other work.
How much does a gas leak repair cost?
Varies with severity. Labour is charged from £75 / 30 min (daytime) up to £147 / 30 min (nighttime) (see /pricing), with materials at trade cost + 30%, itemised. There is no callout fee for emergency work, so you pay only for the labour at the rate for the time of day, plus any materials. We always quote in writing before any further work.
Will my insurance cover gas leak repairs?
Some buildings insurance policies cover sudden gas-related damage. Routine pipework deterioration is typically excluded. We provide insurance-grade reports for direct claim where applicable.
