Leak detection in Buckinghamshire (north).

Very hard chalk-aquifer water at 280 to 320 ppm CaCO3 leaves a specific legacy in northern Buckinghamshire: scale-jacketted copper supply pipes that read deceptively sound on a visual inspection but carry pinhole corrosion beneath the mineral crust. This pattern is prevalent across the HP5 to HP27 band and into the MK17 and MK18 postcodes around Buckingham. Properties in Marlow and Amersham, which tend toward larger detached stock, frequently present with long sub-floor supply runs where even a slow pinhole loss raises water-bill anomalies long before any surface saturation becomes visible.

Our leak-detection surveys use three complementary methods. Thermal imaging cameras identify temperature differentials in floors and walls caused by escaping water without any lifting or breaking. Acoustic correlation pinpoints the leak signal along a pressurised pipe by comparing noise profiles between access points, narrowing the excavation window to centimetres rather than metres. Where the leak is in a complex run or beneath a slab, tracer gas – an inert hydrogen-nitrogen mix – is introduced to the pipe and detected at the surface with a precision probe.
