Portsmouth Water's very hard chalk-aquifer supply – 290 to 330 ppm CaCO3 – deposits scale in supply pipework over time, and the salt-air environment throughout Gosport, Lee-on-the-Solent and Stubbington accelerates corrosion at joints and valve bodies. Those two forces together mean supply-pipe leaks here tend to occur at fittings rather than in straight runs, and they rarely surface as visible damp because the chalk subsoil disperses water laterally before it rises.

We locate leaks using three complementary methods. Acoustic correlation pinpoints the vibration signature of a pressurised escape between two listening points, accurate to within a few centimetres through tarmac or concrete. Thermal imaging identifies temperature differentials where groundwater migration has cooled a slab or wall. Tracer gas – a hydrogen-nitrogen blend safe for occupied buildings – is injected into the pipe and detected at surface level where no other method resolves the position. All three can be combined on a single visit across the PO12 and PO13 postcode areas.
