Gosport sits on a peninsula bounded by Portsmouth Harbour to the east and the Solent to the south – a geography that shapes almost every drainage and leak-detection job we take on here. Portsmouth Water supplies the borough from a chalk aquifer, delivering water that runs between 290 and 330 ppm CaCO3 – firmly in the very hard category. That hardness deposits scale inside supply pipes and on valve seatings at a rate that most of Hampshire's inland districts never see. Overlay that with persistent salt-laden air off Stokes Bay and the Lee-on-the-Solent seafront, and the corrosion picture becomes particular to this peninsula: fittings that might last thirty years inland can show significant degradation in fifteen here.
