Many homes here were fitted with tide-flap valves at their outfalls years ago, and the condition of those flaps – whether they seat cleanly, whether the housing is silted – is often the first thing our engineers investigate.

Portsmouth Water supplies the district from chalk-aquifer sources at hardness levels of 290 to 330 ppm CaCO3, placing Fareham firmly in the very hard category. That hardness is relevant to leak-detection work: calcite scaling inside pipework can mask slow pinhole leaks for months, and the internal deposits that build up in older copper runs make acoustic correlation readings more complex to interpret.
