Hard water at 270 to 310 ppm CaCO3 from Southern Water deposits scale steadily on supply-side fittings across Test Valley, narrowing bores and raising operating pressures until a joint or fitting eventually gives way. Because so many properties sit close to the Test's tributary network – particularly in the SO20, SO21 and SP10 postcode areas around Stockbridge and Andover – even a modest subsurface leak can track through chalk subsoil and reach a protected watercourse unseen.

Our leak-detection surveys use three complementary techniques. Acoustic correlation identifies the resonant frequency of a pressurised leak by comparing signals from two access points, pinpointing the fault to within centimetres without breaking ground. Thermal imaging detects temperature anomalies caused by escaping water behind wall or floor finishes. Where signal attenuation is a problem – common on chalk-ground runs with variable overburden – tracer gas is introduced to the pipe, and a surface probe follows the gas plume directly to the exit point.
