Very hard chalk-aquifer water at 280 to 320 ppm CaCO3 attacks fittings in a specific way across Mole Valley: it deposits scale that masks slow joint weeps for months before moisture eventually breaks through a floor or ceiling, often in properties where the supply infrastructure dates to the original build. Victorian and Edwardian properties in central Dorking and the older Leatherhead streets are most susceptible, but the 1930s stock in Fetcham and Bookham also carries original copper supply runs that are now approaching ninety years old and increasingly prone to pinhole failure.
