Hard water at 280 to 330 ppm CaCO3 – supplied by both Southern Water and Portsmouth Water depending on which part of Arun you are in – deposits scale steadily on internal pipe walls and around fittings. In the Victorian villas of Bognor and Littlehampton that scale often masks pinhole corrosion in lead or early copper supply runs for months before a visible damp patch appears. In the 1980s retirement bungalows of Rustington and the PO21 and PO22 postcodes, the leaks tend to be subtler: hairline fractures in plastic push-fit joints tucked beneath screed floors where there is no obvious wet spot to trigger a call.

We deploy three complementary methods. Thermal imaging reads temperature differentials across floors and walls to locate cooler saturation zones without lifting a single tile. Acoustic correlation then pinpoints the pipe segment under pressure loss to within a matter of centimetres. Where both mains and groundwater signals are too low for acoustic work – common in the sandy coastal sub-soils around the Bognor seafront – inert tracer gas is introduced to the suspect run and traced to surface.
