The chalk-aquifer geology beneath the South Downs delivers very hard water at 290 to 330 ppm CaCO3 to properties across PO18, PO19, PO20, GU28 and GU29, and that hardness translates directly into accelerated scale accumulation inside clay and cast-iron drainage runs. In Chichester's conservation-area streets – where original vitrified-clay laterals are still the norm – partial blockages caused by grease binding to calcium deposits are a recurring pattern. At Selsey, post-war bungalow stock frequently presents with collapsed or root-intruded plastic drainage in shallow, sandy sub-soil.
