A mixer shower is the right answer in almost every London property that runs from a combi boiler or an unvented mains-pressure cylinder. The valve blends pre-heated hot and cold supplies through a thermostatic cartridge, holds a stable 38C set-point, and shuts down automatically if either supply fails, which removes the scalding risk that older manual mixers carried. Installation is straightforward only on paper. In practice the supply pressures need to be balanced within 10 per cent, the pipework geometry has to match the valve back-plate exactly, and the wall recess for a concealed valve has to be cut to the manufacturer's plaster-depth window or the trim plate will not seat flush against the tile.

We install Aqualisa Visage, Mira Mode, Bristan Artisan, Hansgrohe Ecostat, and Grohe Grohtherm thermostatic mixer showers as standard, and we will install any other WRAS-approved manufacturer of your choosing. Every install includes a balanced-pressure check at the inlets, isolation valves on both supplies behind the access panel, the manufacturer's recommended copper or push-fit pipework geometry, a soldered or compression connection to the body, a pressure test under operating load, and full calibration with a digital thermometer at the head. Tile-face sealing is done with a low-modulus neutral-cure silicone so the wall plate does not stain the grout over time.

  • Exposed bar-mixer installation onto existing 15mm copper tails standing proud of the tile face
  • Dual-outlet installation with overhead rose and handset on a slide-rail
  • Upgrade from a manual mixer to a thermostatic valve to bring the suite up to current safe-temperature guidance
  • Bath-shower mixer installation with diverter spout for combined bath and shower use

Our Process

How we deliver

No surprises, no upselling. The exact path every job follows.

  1. 1
    Pre-install survey
We check supply type (combi, unvented mains, gravity), measure hot and cold pressures and flow, and confirm the valve specified is rated for the property. Most mid-range thermostatic mixers need a minimum 1 bar dynamic, and we verify before fitting.
  2. 2
    Isolation and removal
Hot and cold supplies isolated at service valves or the stop-tap, system drained at the lowest outlet, and any outgoing valve removed cleanly. Pipework ends are inspected, cut back to clean copper, and prepared for new joints.
  3. 3
    Pipework geometry set out
For a concealed valve we set the inlet centres to the manufacturer's spec (typically 150mm on a bar mixer) and confirm the body sits within the plaster-depth window so the trim plate seats flush.
  4. 4
    Valve body installed
15mm copper or WRAS-approved push-fit connections made up to the body with the manufacturer's filter washers fitted on the inlets. Isolation valves left accessible behind the panel for future service.
  5. 5
    Pressure test before tile-up
Supplies recommissioned, system run under live pressure for a minimum 15-minute hold, and every joint checked for weep before any tile-face dressing is fitted. This is the only chance to find a fault before it disappears behind the wall.
  6. 6
    Trim, rose, and handset fitted
Wall plate sealed to tile with low-modulus neutral-cure silicone, fixed head or slide-rail installed plumb to spirit level, and the handset hose fitted with the brass weight or check-valve where the unit calls for one.
  7. 7
    Calibration and handover
Thermostatic valve calibrated to a 38C set-point with a digital thermometer at the head, upper limit-stop verified, and the warranty registration card filled out so the manufacturer cover starts cleanly from day one.
Frequently Asked

Your questions answered

How long does a mixer shower installation take?
An exposed bar-mixer onto existing 15mm tails typically completes in 1.5 to 2.5 hours. A concealed valve onto existing chased pipework runs 2.5 to 4 hours. First-fix work that includes new pipework, isolation valves, and chasing into a solid wall is quoted as a separate scope after a site survey. All labour is billed in 30-minute blocks after the one-hour minimum, from £75 / 30 min (daytime) up to £147 / 30 min (nighttime) (see full pricing), inc VAT.
Can I run a mixer shower from a combi boiler?
Yes, most combis paired with a modern thermostatic bar mixer give a stable shower at 38C. The combi's hot flow rate has to meet the mixer's minimum (typically 8 to 10 litres per minute) for sustained performance. We check the combi's plate spec and measure live flow before recommending a model.
Do I need balanced hot and cold pressures?
Yes. Thermostatic mixers expect hot and cold inlet pressures within 10 per cent of each other. A combi feeds hot from mains pressure, so the cold needs to come from mains too, not from a gravity tank. On gravity-fed traditional systems we confirm the head pressure on both sides and may need to add a booster pump.
Should I pick a concealed valve or an exposed bar mixer?
A concealed valve looks cleaner because the pipework is buried, but service access is harder and you cannot move the inlets later. An exposed bar mixer mounts onto two pipe-stub tails on the tile face, services faster, and is the right answer for retrofit jobs where the wall is not coming off. We carry both styles and recommend on a per-room basis.
What about water hardness, will the cartridge scale up?
Most of London is hard or very hard water, so yes, cartridges scale. A quality thermostatic valve will give five to ten years in central London before the cartridge needs descaling or replacing. Fitting a whole-house scale reducer or an in-line phosphate dosing unit slows the rate, and we can quote for either on the same visit.
