Leak detection in Reading.

Thames Water's chalk-aquifer supply at 270 to 320 ppm CaCO3 is the underlying cause of much of the leak-detection work we undertake in Reading. That hardness deposits calcium scale inside copper pipework over decades, progressively weakening the pipe wall until pinhole failure develops – often inside a partition or beneath a ground-floor slab where the loss runs silently for months before rising damp or a spike in a water meter gives the first indication.

Our survey methodology is non-destructive throughout. Thermal imaging cameras reveal temperature anomalies in walls and floors that point to active water movement. Acoustic correlation equipment listens across multiple contact points and triangulates the precise leak location within the pipe run. Where a supply line is buried or the signal is ambiguous, tracer gas – a non-toxic hydrogen-nitrogen mix – is introduced to the pipe and detected at the surface with a probe, pinpointing the fault to within centimetres.

Converted-flat blocks in RG1, RG2 and RG30 are a recurring site for this work: shared risers serving multiple dwellings make attribution between properties genuinely complex, and a forensically documented survey is essential for separating liability.
