Drainage in Rother.

The soakaway question defines Rother drainage work. A significant proportion of properties in TN31, TN32, TN33, TN39 and TN40 – particularly older rural stock around Battle and Robertsbridge, and seafront-era terraces behind Bexhill Pavilion – discharge to private soakaways rather than Southern Water's public sewer. When those soakaways become saturated or the inlet run collapses, there is no network operator to call; the owner carries full responsibility.

Every job starts with a CCTV drain survey: a camera pushed through the full drainage run to identify root ingress, fractured clay sections, or silted inlet chambers before any intervention is planned. Where blockages are confirmed, high-pressure water jetting clears the line and a post-jet camera pass verifies the result. Cracked or partially collapsed runs are addressed without excavation wherever possible using CIPP (cured-in-place pipe) lining, which reinstates structural integrity from the inside and is particularly suited to the narrow access typical of Rye's Conservation Area properties where digging up a cobbled yard requires consent. Excavation is reserved for full collapses or when soakaway chambers need physical replacement.
