What sets Rother apart

Property stock here divides neatly into two worlds. On the coast, Bexhill-on-Sea (TN39, TN40) holds a dense run of Edwardian and inter-war terraces clustered around the De La Warr Pavilion; many were built before the public sewer reached their back yards and still run to private soakaways. Inland, Battle (TN33) and Robertsbridge (TN32) carry a scattering of older rural dwellings similarly unconnected to mains drainage. In Rye (TN31) the Conservation Area designation means any external pipework alteration – even replacing a visible soil-vent pipe – requires prior written consent from Rother District Council before work can start.

Southern Water supplies the district at a hardness of 270 to 320 ppm CaCO3, firmly in the hard-water band. Scale accumulates steadily in supply pipework, and Rother properties running private soakaways are entirely outside the network's maintenance scope, placing the full burden of upkeep on the owner.
