Leak detection in Rother.

Southern Water delivers at 270 to 320 ppm CaCO3 across Rother, and hard water leaves mineral deposits that mask small leaks in supply pipework for months before they show at the surface. In Rye's Conservation Area (TN31), internal leaks are especially consequential: if concealed moisture is traced to the fabric of a listed building the repair scope escalates rapidly, and insurers require documented evidence of the fault location before authorising works.

Our process deploys three complementary techniques. Thermal imaging cameras scan floors, walls and ceilings for temperature differentials that betray wet areas without breaking into the structure. Where a pipe route is known but the fault position is not, acoustic correlation equipment pinpoints the precise leak location to within centimetres by comparing pressure-wave timing between two sensors. For supply lines that are too deep or too well-lagged for acoustic work – common on the older Bexhill and Robertsbridge stock in TN39, TN40 and TN32 – tracer gas is introduced to the isolated section and detected at the surface with a calibrated probe.
