Chatham's naval-base heritage has left a distinctive stock of Victorian terraces and Admiralty-era housing, many with original cast-iron drainage still in active service. Gillingham and Rainham add a strong band of 1950s and 1960s estates where cast-iron soil stacks are nearing the end of their design life. Rochester city centre and Strood bring their own mix of conservation-area terraced housing and more recent suburban build. Water throughout the district comes from South East Water and Southern Water, both drawing on the hard chalk aquifer; hardness consistently runs at 280 to 330 ppm CaCO3, which means scale is a practical issue for any copper supply pipework that has been in service for more than a decade.
