Emergency response

Sewage backup emergency

PPE-equipped engineers, jetting, sanitisation, and Trade Effluent Consent paperwork where required.

Sewage entering a property, through a backed-up toilet, basement floor drain, or external manhole surcharge, is a serious health and structural emergency. Categorised as Category 3 'Black Water' under industry-standard IICRC S500, it contains pathogens (E. coli, hepatitis A, norovirus), and any porous materials it has touched (carpet, soft furnishings, plasterboard) typically need disposal under controlled-waste regulations.

Our emergency drainage team responds within 60 minutes with full PPE, industrial wet vacs rated for contaminated water, anti-microbial decontamination chemicals (per BS EN 14476), and the documentation required for HSE compliance and insurance claim handling.

Frequently Asked

Your questions answered

How dangerous is sewage backup contamination?
Significantly. Sewage is classified as Category 3 Black Water, contains pathogens including E. coli, hepatitis A and norovirus. Direct contact carries genuine infection risk, and porous materials (carpet, plasterboard, fabric) cannot be effectively decontaminated and should be disposed of under controlled-waste protocols.
Will my insurance cover sewage backup damage?
Most UK home buildings insurance policies cover sudden sewage backup from sources outside your property (Thames Water sewer issues, shared drain failures). Policies vary on internal source backup, some cover, some require accidental damage extension. We document the source on the CCTV survey for insurance purposes. Insurance & restoration →
How quickly can you respond?
Within 60 minutes anywhere in London. Sewage backup is prioritised above all other emergency dispatch categories because of biohazard risk.
Who's responsible, me or Thames Water?
Depends on where the blockage / collapse is. Inside your property boundary = your responsibility. Public sewer or shared drain = Thames Water's responsibility (most shared drains transferred to water authorities under the 2011 Regulations). We identify the source on our CCTV survey and direct you to Thames Water for free repair on their side.
Do I need to leave the property during cleanup?
Vulnerable occupants (children, elderly, immunocompromised) should leave the affected area until full decontamination is complete. Healthy adults can remain in unaffected parts of the property if there's clear isolation. We'll advise based on the specific situation.
